If you are exploring the practice of spiritual direction for the first time or if you are looking for a new spiritual director, I like to begin with the sharing of stories. Our initial conversation includes me listening to you share the arc of your story with God and what you are hoping for in spiritual direction. Then, I will share a bit of my story and the way I envision and offer spiritual direction. There will be time at the end to ask any questions that arise.

Here’s an overview of a typical session:

Transitions are important. So, I will ask you what you sense is needed in your transition into this listening practice. If you need Spirit-filled words to enter the time, I will be ready with a Scripture reading. If you require some time to settle and listen for the Spirit to lead, we will share in a prayerful silence. If you are best served by pouring out all that is happening in your life, I will listen and we decide together what to begin exploring.

The heart of the session is listening to God and for God in a conversation. This dialogue unfolds graciously with some pauses for reflection and prayer throughout.

Returning to jesus to Close the Practice

I will invite you to prayerfully reflect on what has been most helpful in our session and ask you to return to Jesus in silent or spoken prayer. If you choose silence, I will then close with a simple prayer.

There is no homework between spiritual direction meetings, however you might notice that you are more attentive to the voice and presence of God in your daily activities.
